The Sole Focus on Allah’s Pleasure in Victories

The actions and victories of Osman bin Ertugrul, the founder of the Ottoman Empire, were not motivated by economic, military, or political ambitions. Rather, his sole purpose was to uphold the word of truth and spread Islam.

Historian Ahmad Rafiq writes in his encyclopedia Tarikh al-Aam al-Kabeer that Osman was an extremely pious man. He believed that the propagation of Islam was a sacred duty. He was a man of deep political insight and wisdom. He did not establish his empire based on the love of power but on the love of spreading Islam.

Mısır Oğlu states:
“Osman bin Ertugrul firmly believed that his life’s mission was only to strive for the exaltation of Allah’s word through Jihad in His path. He devoted all his mental and physical abilities to achieving this goal.”

These were some of Osman I’s outstanding qualities, which were the natural result of his faith, preparation for the Hereafter, love for believers, hatred for disbelief and rebellion, and commitment to Jihad in the path of Allah and the call to truth.

This is why Osman, in his conquests in Asia Minor, would always give Roman rulers three choices:

  1. Accept Islam
  2. Pay Jizya (a tax for non-Muslim subjects)
  3. Prepare for battle

As a result, some embraced Islam, while others agreed to pay Jizya. However, those who neither accepted Islam nor agreed to pay Jizya faced Osman’s resolute military campaigns, through which he successfully incorporated vast territories into his realm.

His unwavering faith in Allah and consciousness of the Hereafter made his personality remarkably serious and charismatic. Despite his power and authority, his rule was based on justice and humility rather than arrogance and oppression.

Allah Almighty granted him divine support, paving the way for his dominance and victories. This was a special favor from Allah upon Osman. Due to his strategic wisdom, vast armies, and commanding presence, he was able to establish influence and control over Asia Minor.

Because of his deep love for calling people to Allah, Osman I not only achieved great military victories but also won over hearts through faith and righteous character. He ensured that, whenever a nation was conquered, they were invited to Islam. His governance emphasized justice and reform, showing deep affection for the believers while maintaining firm opposition to disbelievers and rebels.

The Ottoman Governance System

The life of Amir Osman, the founder of the Ottoman Empire, revolved around Jihad and Da’wah (Islamic preaching). Scholars constantly surrounded him, overseeing the implementation of Islamic laws and administrative affairs.

The will of Osman Ghazi to his son Orhan Ghazi is still recorded in history. It provides insight into the cultural and religious principles upon which the Ottoman Empire was later built.

When Osman was on his deathbed, he advised his son:

“O my son! Never engage in any action that contradicts the command of the Almighty. Whenever you face difficulties in state affairs, seek guidance from scholars and ask for their assistance.
Honor the obedient ones and reward the soldiers generously. Beware of being deceived by the temptations of wealth and power.
O my son! You know that our purpose is to seek the pleasure of the Lord of the Worlds. Through Jihad, we shall spread the light of our religion to every corner of the world. Therefore, only speak and act in ways that bring Allah’s pleasure.”

Osman emphasized that they did not fight wars for territorial expansion or to enslave people. Instead, their battles were purely for the cause of Islam.

In the book Tarikh al-Siyasi lil-Dawlah al-Aliyyah al-Uthmaniyyah, another version of his will states:

“O my son! The propagation of Islam, guiding people towards the faith, and protecting the honor, dignity, and wealth of Muslims is your responsibility. You will be held accountable before Allah for this duty.”

Similarly, in Ma Sa’atat Osman, Osman advises Orhan:

“O my son! Always respect and uphold the dignity of scholars. Follow their guidance, for they only command righteousness.
O my dear son! Never engage in an action that does not please Allah. If you encounter difficulties, consult the scholars of Islam, as they will certainly guide you towards righteousness.”

He further states:

“Remember, my son, our only path in this world is the one set by Allah. Our sole mission is to spread Islam. We are not seekers of wealth and status.”

In Al-Tarikh al-Uthmani al-Musawwar, another excerpt of his will is recorded:

“To my sons and companions, my will is this: Keep the mission of Jihad alive and always uphold Islam’s honor. Through the most noble Jihad, hold firm to the sacred banner of Islam. Always remain servants of Islam, for Allah granted victories to even a weak servant like me.
Through Jihad in Allah’s path, spread the word of Tawheed (monotheism) across the world. Any descendant of mine who deviates from truth and justice will be deprived of the intercession of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) on the Day of Judgment.”

“O my son! Every human must eventually bow before death. My time has come. I entrust this empire to you and leave you in the care of Allah. Rule with justice in all your affairs.”

This will became the foundational guideline for the Ottoman rulers who followed. They upheld knowledge, established religious and military institutions, honored scholars, and remained committed to Jihad in Allah’s path.

As a result, they expanded Islamic civilization to distant lands, spreading its influence wherever they ruled.

This is the immortal will upon which the Ottomans built their empire, leading them to an era of unparalleled glory, honor, and dominance.

At the time of Osman I’s passing, the Ottoman state spanned 16,000 square kilometers, and he successfully secured access to the Sea of Marmara for his young empire.
