From a historical perspective, the following are the pieces of advice that Osman Ghazi gave to his son Orhan.
The life of Osman, the founder of the Ottoman Empire, was dedicated to Jihad (struggle in the path of Allah) and spreading the message of Islam. He was always surrounded by scholars who guided him in religious matters. They oversaw the implementation of Islamic laws and administrative planning in the empire. Osman’s will to his son is still preserved in history, providing guidance on the civilizational and Islamic principles upon which the Ottoman Empire was later established.
When Osman was on his deathbed, he gave the following advice to his son:
**“O my son! Never engage in any act that is not commanded by Almighty Allah. Whenever you face any difficulty in the administration of the empire, consult the religious scholars and seek their help.
O my son! Always honor the obedient ones and reward the soldiers. Beware that Satan does not deceive you with the wealth and power of the empire.
My son! You know that our goal is only to seek the pleasure of Almighty Allah, and we strive to spread the light of Islam across the world through Jihad. Therefore, always speak only that which pleases Allah.
My son! We are not the kind of people who fight wars for the sake of conquest and to enslave others. We live for Islam, and if we must die, we die for Islam. This is what you are worthy of, my son.”**
In the book “Tarikh Al-Siyasi li Dawlat Al-Othmaniyyah” (The Political History of the Ottoman Empire), another narration describes Osman’s will to his son in these words:
“O my son! It is your duty to spread Islam, guide people towards this religion, and protect the honor, dignity, and wealth of the Muslims. You will be answerable to Allah for this responsibility.”
In another book, “Ma Sa’at Uthman”, Osman’s will is recorded in slightly different words:
**“O my son! I advise you to always respect and honor the scholars of the Ummah. Never allow any decline in their dignity. Follow their advice because they always command what is good.
O my beloved son! Never do anything that does not have the approval of Allah. If you ever face difficulty, consult the scholars of Islamic law. They will surely guide you towards goodness.
Remember, my son! The only path for us in this world is the path prescribed by Allah. Our sole purpose is to spread the religion of Islam. We are not seekers of wealth and power.”**
In the book “Al-Tarikh Al-Othmani Al-Musawwar” (The Illustrated History of the Ottoman Empire), another version of the will is recorded, where Osman addresses Orhan:
**“To my sons and companions, my advice is: Always keep the banner of Islam high by continuing the struggle in the path of Allah. Hold on firmly to the sacred flag of Islam through the noblest form of Jihad. Always remain servants of Islam, for Allah has chosen even a weak servant like me to conquer cities. Spread the message of Tawheed (the oneness of Allah) throughout the world through Jihad in the path of Allah.
Whoever among my descendants deviates from justice and truth will be deprived of the intercession of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) on the Day of Judgment.
O my son! There is no human in this world who can escape death.
The time of my departure has arrived. I entrust this empire to you and place you in the care of our Lord. Always uphold justice in all your affairs.”**
This will became a code of conduct for the Ottomans, which they followed diligently. They established educational institutions, military academies, and respected scholars while upholding Jihad in the path of Allah. As a result, they expanded their influence across the world and spread Islamic civilization to distant lands.
This is the immortal will that the Ottoman rulers followed during their golden era—a time when they attained honor, glory, and dominance.
When Osman I passed away, leaving behind the Ottoman Empire, its territory spanned 16,000 square kilometers. He succeeded in securing a route to the Sea of Marmara for his newly established state.
